It seems that roofers disagree on the proper way to install drip edge when using ice / water shield. Not only do roofers disagree, so do the manufacturers of ice shield. Many home inspectors and code enforcement officers also disagree. There are a few different ways I see ice shield installed.

  • Ice shield is installed first on the roof deck and wraps down the fascia. The drip edge in attached on top of the ice shield. I see this method in most applications. This method is recommended by many manufacturers.
  • Drip edge is installed first directly on the roof deck. The ice shield is then installed on top of the drip edge. The ice shield may wrap down over the drip edge.
  • Vapor barrier membrane is installed on the roof deck and wraps down over the fascia. Drip edge is installed over the vapor barrier. Ice shield is installed over the drip edge to the leading edge of the roof deck.

  • Ice shield is installed first on the roof deck and wraps down over the fascia. The drip edge is installed over the ice shield. A vapor barrier membrane is installed over the drip edge. Roof shingles are then installed. So what is the best way to install drip edge with ice shield?

  • Many experts think that installing ice shield first on the roof deck that wraps down over the fascia is the best way. The drip edge is installed over the ice shield. A vapor barrier membrane is installed over the drip edge. Roof shingles are then installed. Because ice can form in the gutter and back up under the drip edge causing leaks between the fascia and roof deck, sealing this area with ice shield will help prevent water from entering the house. Another acceptable method is to install flashing tape directly on the roof deck wrapping down over the fascia and on the roof deck approximately 6-12 inches. Drip edge is then installed. Ice shield is then installed to the leading edge of the drip edge.
